The inaugural mine safety event is being held Wednesday.
The Department of Labor announced the first “Stand Down to Save Lives” event by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on May 17 as part of a national campaign to reduce injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. There have been 18 fatalities in the mining sector this year—six more than at the same time last year—due to incidents such as vehicle collisions, electrocutions, falls from elevated surfaces, equipment rollovers, and drowning.
The MSHA is calling on the industry to focus on safety and health requirements, including training, workplace examinations, and proper personal protective equipment. The agency has encouraged the entire mining community, including miners, operators, and unions, to emphasize safety and health during the week of May 15-19. Agency leadership plans to visit mines in Maryland and Virginia to emphasize the importance of safety in the workplace.
